Gum Problems in Older Adults or Seniors

The progression of tooth and gum diseases is not likely to keep teeth for long. At the early stages of the growth of permanent teeth where the initial calcification for both the upper (maxillary) and lower (mandibular) teeth start to complete, care must be practiced in order to keep it strong against all kinds of decay. The gums should also be considered, as it is part and parcel of the overall oral health. A healthy gum should show a uniform color ranging on “light, coral pink” to “medium pink” depending on one’s racial pigmentation. The things to look out for when it comes to gum color are reddish or bluish hues as it can be a sign of tooth or gum inflammation.

In the case of older adults and seniors, studies have shown how they have the highest numbers of those suffering from various forms of periodontal disease. Gum disease cause varies, but the main source may be the fact that there is little to no oral routine followed daily, or exposure to professional dental care. Several old seniors ages 55-65 and above have lost most or all of their teeth due to tooth and gum decay over the years and because of old age.

This is why nowadays dentists have been finding ways to check and treat gum disease as early as possible in order to prevent the infection from spreading and the effects to be carried out in the late adult stages. Even then, for older people who are currently suffering from gum disease, they are strongly encouraged to follow a routine oral hygiene habit in order to ward off the progression and spreading to all the areas of the mouth.

What people take for granted most is how oral health is indicative of our general health and well-being and for us to continue to have a quality life. The teeth and gums, being part of the mouth, have an important role when we communicate by talking and our facial expression and when we eat and chew. The teeth and gums are most especially helpful in support of the face and jaw. Recent research and studies have also shown the link of gum disease with various ailments like cardiac and respiratory diseases and even to stroke and diabetes.

Gum disease cures that are effective are pretty hard to find and are expensive if performed by doctors, that’s why prevention is the best that you can do prevent losing your smile.
